Pirated DVDs and CDs to be cracked down
Recently, the Cambodia government warned all DVDs and CDs shop owners in Phnom Penh on Friday that the government will take its strong measure against pirated DVDs and CDs sold in Cambodia in order to protect the intellectual property of the local writers and producers.
The 2003 intellectual property law passed stipulated that those who illegally sell copyrighted DVDs and CDs will be facing the penalties up to one year in prison and a maximum fine of $6,250.
Most of Cambodian people throughout the country like buying copies of DVDs and CDs rather than original ones because it is cheap.
Presently, there are more than 1,000 stalls selling illegally copyrighted movies, karaoke and music in Phnom Penh, not including the mobile vendors.
Cambodia became the member of the World Trade Organization in 2003, and it will face a 2013 deadline in order to comply with regulation.
The government will only crack down on the Cambodia-produced DVDs and CDs but in the future it will take to eliminate the sale of pirated foreign-made movie and music. On the other hand, foreign movies without ministry’s license will not be protected.
